David and Debra Whitaker were excited to learn that they were expecting a little girl. Already parents to two boys, Debra especially was pleased to close ranks on the boys in the family and add another female to the bunch. Bette Alexis was born in the fall of 1981, although the parents had struggled to come up with a name for their new addition, Bette Davis Eyes had been a huge hit in the spring of that year, and it was hearing that song on the radio that inspired them to name their daughter. Although as soon as they found a middle name they liked, Bette was never used, and almost from day one, their daughter would be known solely by her middle name. Eventually even her middle name was shortened and eventually she became Alex.
Alex grew up in a household with two elder brothers, and it wasn’t long before she had learned to fend for herself against them, they loved each other of course, but being the youngest, and a girl, meant she was easy pickings for the boys and their pranks and was often talked into doing things that ended up in the only time she was called by her first name. Her mother shouting Bette at the top of her voice was the first and only signal Alex needed to know she was in trouble.
Although family life was a happy one as far as Alex was concerned, her world was turned upside down one day returning from school when she found her mother and father in the middle of a heated argument and ornaments and china being thrown. Although she didn’t understand what it meant at the time, she was told her daddy was leaving them and she was to stay with her mom and brothers. Her dad took her aside and explained as best he could to a seven year old, that he had fallen in love with someone else, and he wanted to be with her, and not home with them. Alex took the divorce extremely hard. And it didn’t help that her soon to be step-mother, Maggie, didn’t like her very much. Alex didn’t mind, because the feeling was extremely mutual. Alex blamed Maggie for her parents splitting and breaking up the family, and it is something she carries with her to this day.
Although at first she was excited to learn she would be getting new step siblings, Maggie had a boy and girl of her own, and as Alex had always wanted a sister, she was excited to get to know her new step siblings better. Unfortunately this feeling was not mutual. Her new step-sister, Julie, did everything in her power to belittle and talk down to Alex, and as for her step-brother, Issac, he barely spoke to her. Alex was happy that their visitation was once every other weekend, being at her fathers new house with his new family made Alex miserable, and she started wishing for the weekend to be over as soon as she arrived, even going so far as to beg and plead her mother not to send her.
Debra started to resent being left at home with the children and as time went on, made it perfectly clear that she felt David had ruined her life. She hadn’t been able to move on with her own life because she didn’t have time to go out and meet new people or have a personal life of her own. Alex began to grow even further apart from her father. Growing up in a household of mostly boys, Alex had become something of a tomboy, and it wasn’t until she reached high school and started noticing other boys and dating that she became more feminine. Her style changed to reflect this as well. She started wearing more dresses and applying makeup. Always hearing she was plain and would never find a husband from her step sister didn’t dampen Alex’s spirits and she lost her virginity to her boyfriend at age 16. A fact she never told anyone for a long time.
Alex did okay at school, she wasn’t an especially gifted student, but she didn’t struggle either. She got good grades and stayed out of trouble. As she grew up, she started forming a close bond with her eldest brother Mark. Because he was older, and she was the baby, he felt a need to look after her, which she appreciated. Mark leaving for university hit Alex harder than she thought, and she was left at home with her mother and their other brother Josh.
Going to college or university had never really been a dream for Alex, she wasn’t bothered if she didn’t get in to any schools, she was happy to live her life as she was and after graduating from school, she started a part time job at a local bakery, and started to learn the trade. Her mother was horrified by Alex’s decision to not attend university and gain a better education for herself. But Alex was happy at the bakery, learning the trade and picking up tips for making and creating her own recipes.
It was while working at the bakery that she met someone that would change her life. A regular customer who she became friendly with eventually summoned the courage to introduce himself and ask Alex out on a date. Alex had been smitten by him and was so happy that he asked her out, she almost shouted yes in his face when accepting his invitation. His name was Stephan, and after two years of dating, Stephan proposed and Alex accepted. They had a small wedding in Alex’s home town and then received word that Stephan would be transferred to New York City for work, the offer was exciting for Alex because she had always wanted to live in the city, and the only down side was that she would have to leave the bakery, which broke her heart.
The couple lived happily for a while, although Stephan would sometimes have to go out of town for work, Alex busied herself with carrying on her love for baking, and eventually got into making her own ranges of jams and jellies, and after striking up conversation with a local store, they offered to sell it for her.
Her happiness was short lived, however. Stephen had been away on business so Alex had decided to go home and visit her mother. Unfortunately the trip was cut short when her mother had to take care of a neighbor who had taken ill. Alex returned home two days early, to the nasty shock of finding her husband in bed with another woman. Alex felt sick. Stephan had know how hard she had taken it when her parents had divorced because of an affair, and as far as Alex was concerned, the couple was happy. But Stephen confessed the affair had been going on for months, and he wanted a divorce. Devastated, Alex packed some things and went to a hotel.
A few days later, Alex received word from Stephen that once again he was being transferred out of the city for work and that he would happily give her the house as part of the divorce. At first the idea of returning to that house made her feel ill, but she knew it was an offer she couldn’t turn down. So once she was sure Stephen and his mistress had left, Alex returned to her home.
Unfortunately Alex found herself not coping very well with her husband leaving her, and she called her brother, Mark, and begged him to come and stay with her. He too had gone through a divorced and she knew it would be easy for him to move with her and find work. She was delighted when Mark agreed, although laying down some firm rules that he would only stay for a year to help her get back on her feet.
Now as Alex tried her best to get over the devastation of losing her husband, she finds comfort in her passion for bakery and the company of her brother, and she knows she will be able to turn her life around.
